Baseball suffers two losses at Firehouse Classic on Saturday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Southwestern University baseball team wrapped up play in the Firehouse Classic Saturday at Posey Field. The Pirates were defeated by Randolph-Macon, 6-0, before falling to Millsaps, 11-7.

Southwestern (0-3) again struggled at the plate in the opener, as the Pirates were limited to four hits and struck out 15 times.

Colten Shea was 1-for-3 with a two stolen bases, while Jacob Kendra (0-1) took the loss after giving up five runs (two earned) over 5.2 innings.

James Walsh (1-0) earned the win after striking out 14 and allowing only two hits over six scoreless panels. Patrick Solomita picked up the save for the Yellow Jackets after yielding only two hits over the final three stanzas.

In the nightcap, Southwestern jumped out to a 5-1 lead over the Majors in the fourth inning.

However, after both teams scored a run in the fifth, Millsaps plated six in the top of the sixth inning to take an 8-6 advantage. The Majors tacked on two more in the seventh to push their lead to 10-6.

The Pirates managed to push across a run in the eighth, but Millsaps responded with a tally in the top of the ninth to cap the scoring.

Thomas O'Brien was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs for Southwestern. Will Cates added two hits, including a triple, and drove in three.

Hayden Holley received a no-decision after tossing five innings and giving up two runs (one earned). Matt Litz (0-1) was handed the loss after giving up four runs on four hits without retiring a batter in the sixth.

Kenny Wright (1-0) came on and pitched five innings out of the bullpen to earn the win for the Majors.

Southwestern will return to Georgetown to open its home slate on Friday, Feb. 12, against Whitworth. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at Rockwell Field.
