Pirates strand eight in loss to Centenary

Southwestern hit well but was unable to capitalize as they stranded eight baserunners in a 6-3 loss to Centenary College.

After three scoreless innings the Gents rallied for four runs in the fourth to take a big 4-0 lead. SU managed to get one run back in the bottom half of the inning, but Centenary quickly got that run back in the fifth.

On the first pitch of the at bat Austyn Laird pulled Southwestern within three with a homer over the left field fence in the 5th. The Gents loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth and seemed poised for another big inning, but Colin Buckley worked out of the jam to get two outs with just one run scoring and Noah Clark entered on the mound to close off the inning.

Jared Bogosian opened the bottom of the sixth with a double and stole third. Tyler Bludau brought him home but SU wasn't able to cut the lead any further and still trailed by three, 6-3, through six.

Defenses took over from there and no outher runs scored to arrive at the 6-3 final.

Will Cates was the only Pirate to notch multiple hits, going 2-5 from the plate with one RBI. Joseph Koch suffered the loss, allowing four runs on three hits in 3.2 innings of work.

Southwestern falls to 16-17 on the year and 6-7 in the SCAC while Centenary improves to 18-12 overall and 11-2 in the conference. The Pirates hold a slight half game lead over Austin College for fourth place in the conference while Centenary remains in second. The two teams turnaround for a double header beginning at 1 pm on Sunday.
