Pirates remain perfect with win over #6/#13 Trinity

Southwestern stays perfect in SCAC play at 4-0 on the year after a 4-3 win over nationally-ranked Trinity at home on Friday night in the first annual Vs. Cancer game.

Prior to the contest nearly 30 Pirates shaved their heads in support for those battling cancer while the team as a whole raised nearly $7,000.

The second inning had all the action early as Trinity scored first with one run on a passed ball. Southwestern responded with a big two-out rally as Colten Shea singled to left field to bring home the first run and Will Cates followed with a two-RBI double to right field, putting SU on top 3-1 through two.

Trinity tied the game in the sixth on a two-RBI shot down the left field line by Walters and seemed poised to take the lead in the eighth. The Tigers got runners at first and second with one out, but Riley Wayland worked out of the jam to keep the game tied.

Southwestern snagged the lead in the eighth on an RBI single to the left side by Chase Allen that drove home Will Cates for the go ahead run.

Wayland confidently took care of business on the mound, striking out two of three to close the game and earn the win.

Cates led at the plate, going 2-4 with two RBIs and one runs scored. Trinity's Jeremy Wolf also went 2-4 to lead the way for the Tigers as the plate.

Southwestern improves to 12-9 on the year, 4-0 in the SCAC while Trinity falls to 16-7 overall, 3-4 in SCAC play. The two teams square off again on Saturday for a double-header beginning at 2 p.m.
