Baseball splits day two in Memphis

 Southwestern fell 11-6 to Wheaton College in game one before defeating Washington University in game two 9-8.

Southwestern scored first in game one with one run in the second and third innings, but Wheaton posted a five run third to take a 1-2 lead. The Pirates responded with three runs in the fourth before Wheaton added one more to hold a narrow 6-5 lead through four.

Teams traded runs in the sixth and seventh, but Wheaton unloaded with four runs in the eighth to secure the win.

Ethan Hallmark led at the plate, going 3-5 with one RBI and one run scored while Jake Pawelek drove in two RBIs. Clayton Haag garnered the loss, allowing five runs on three hits while walking two and striking out two.

In game two, Southwestern used a steady stream of offense to get a lead and hung on for a 9-8 win. The Pirates posted one run in the first through fourth innings and followed with five runs in the fifth to lead 9-4 through five.

Washington attempted a big comeback and came within one run with four runs in the eighth, but Southwestern got out of the jam to take the 9-8 win.

Robert Wehman, Scott Gelbart and Tyler Bludau had two hits each in the win. Noah Clark earned the win, allowing no runs on one hit with two walks and six strikeouts.

Southwestern moves to 4-3 on the year after the weekend. They next head to Sherman to face Austin College on Friday at 6 p.m.
