Baseball takes first game in Memphis over Fontbonne

Despite stranding 10 baserunners, Southwestern defeated Fontbonne 5-2 on Friday morning in Memphis.

Jared Bogosian's two-out double in the second got things going for the Pirates. Cam Allen followed with a single through the left side to advance Bogosian to third who stole home on the next batter to give SU a 1-0 lead.

The Pirates added two in the third, one coming on a stolen base by Colten Shea and the other on an RBI grounder by Ethan Hallmark with two outs.

Fontbonne attempted to close the gap significantly in the sixth, but managed just one run to cut Southwestern's lead to two, 3-1. SU was able to get the run back and then some in the seventh. Scott Gelbart's sacrifice fly brought home Ben Little and Garrett Augsburger was hit to bring in Hallmark.

In the ninth inning, Fontbonne scored one but the Pirates' defense held strong to keep the rally from materializing.

Bogosian and Jake Pawelek went 1-2 from the plate with one walk to lead Southwestern offensively. Jeremy Rice earned the win going six innings, allowing one run, unearned, on one hit while walking two and four strikeouts.

Southwestern improves to 3-2 on the year while Fontbonne falls in their first game to start the season 0-1. The Pirates remain in Memphis to face Wheaton College on Millsaps' campus at 10am Saturday.
