Pirates down Tornados

The Pirates took advantage of six Tornado errors to defeat Concordia 7-5 on Friday night in Austin.

Southwestern opened the game with two runs in the first and held Concordia scoreless until the fifth inning. SU posted two more runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to four, 4-0, but Concordia had the answer as they scored five runs on two hits.

After two scoreless innings, SU evened the count on an RBI double by Scott Gelbart down the left field line to drive home Robert Wehman to tie the game 5-5. After working out of a jam in the bottom of the eighth, Southwestern added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth. With the win in hand, the Pirates made it a reality with a three-up, three-down bottom of the ninth.

Ethan Hallmark led at the plate with an outstanding 3-4 day with two RBIs. Riley Wayland earned the win, his first of the season, with three strikeouts, no runs and no hits in two innings of work. Jeremy Rice had a strong start, allowing just three hits and no runs while walking one and striking out six in four innings on the mound.

Southwestern improves to 1-1 on the year. They remain in Austin to for a double-header on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
