SAN ANTONIO – Southwestern was unable to overcome an early deficit as the Pirates fell 15-3 to Centenary in an elimination game at the SCAC Baseball Championships.

The loss ends the Pirates season at 14-28 in the second season under head coach R.J. Thomas.

Both pitchers settled into a groove early as the Pirates cut the Gents lead to 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth. However, Centenary exploded to score four runs on four hits and added six more runs in the bottom of the fifth to push its lead to 12-1.

Holden Novak went the distance for the Gents as he scattered seven hits and allowed just three unearned runs for the win.

Pirate starter Jeremy Rice was tagged with thee loss as he ran into trouble in the fourth inning. Handing the ball off to the bullpen Michael Platz and Joseph Koch allowed six of the runs as the Centenary offense tallied 14 hits in the contest.

Charlie St. Clair and Ben Little finished with multiple hits as Little picked up the only RBI for Southwestern. Colten Shea and Little both added a double for the Pirates as their offense was unable to match Centenary.

Southwestern finished 10-8 in league play and fought to win the final three series of the season to earn the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament. The turnaround comes after going winless a year ago.

The season also saw Southwestern quadruple its win total from last season and set a single-season record for stolen bases with 111 – breaking the previous record of 93 set in 2002.
