SHREVEPORT, La. – Snapping a seven-game losing streak the Southwestern University baseball team put an end to all the heartbreaking losses taking an 11-6 win over Centenary after falling in game one 9-3 Saturday afternoon in SCAC action.
The night cap saw Southwestern rally back from a 5-2 deficit to claim an 11-6 win and snap a seven-game losing streak.
The Pirates exploded with six run on just three hits and an error in the eighth inning to take a 9-5 lead. All six runs came with two outs in the inning after the first two batters grounded out.
Colten Shea plated the first two runs on a single up the middle scoring Ben Little and Drew Fleischman. Shea would score after a single from Charlie St. Clair and a pair of walks to Zach Lynch and Will Cates pushed the sophomore home.
With the bases loaded Chase Allen was hit by a pitch scoring St. Clair followed by a wild pitch that scored Lynch. St. Clair paced the Pirate offense going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored as the top half of the lineup tallied nine of the 12 hits in the game.
Jacob Kendra threw five innings and earned a no-decision thanks to the Pirate rally. Matt Litz and Nino Tutino pitched the sixth and seventh innings allowing no runs as Tutino picked up his first win of the season. Carl Mueller finished off the Gents with a perfect eighth and worked out of trouble in the ninth to close out the win.
In the first game the Pirates were held scoreless through the first three innings before starting a late inning rally.
Charlie St. Clair and Will Cates led off the inning with back-to-back singles before a seeing-eye single from Zach Lynch scored St. Clair. The Pirates added a second run in the inning as Jake Pawelek scored on a Tyler Bludau single to pull within 6-2.
However, the Gents responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 9-2 lead. Southwestern was able to add one more run in the sixth when Lynch singled to center again scoring Pawelek but that was all the Pirate offense managed.
Lynch and St. Clair finished with two hits each as Lynch tallied two RBIs in the loss.
A rough start by Brett Marcom gave Centenary the early lead before Colton Seeton and Ethan Luna came in relief. However, neither reliever was able to stop the Gents' offense before Dickson Wharton finished the fifth and sixth innings of hitless baseball.
Paul Arcement went the distance for Centenary allowing eight hits and all three runs scored by Southwestern. Arcement improved to 3-2 on the season as Marcom fell to 2-5 for the Pirates.
Southwestern (5-20, 2-7 SCAC) closes out a seven-game road swing on Tuesday at Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Pirates will try to avenge a one-run loss from earlier this month when the Cru picked up the ninth inning win. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
