SAN ANTONIO – The Southwestern University baseball team was never able to catch-up with the No. 2 Trinity Tigers Saturday falling in game one of a twin bill, 10-5 before dropping the series finale 7-2.
The Pirates rallied in both games but was never able to overcome an early deficit Saturday
Game one saw Southwestern battle back to take a 5-3 lead after trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the second. The rally started when Charlie St. Clair singled to lead off the inning and as it looked like the Pirates would strand a pair of runners, Tyler Bludau belted a 3-run homer to left.
It was the only hit for Bludau who tallied three of the Pirates five RBIs in the first loss.
Clayton Sparks recorded his 10th game with multiple hits going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
On the mound Brett Marcom was unable to get out of the fourth inning going 3.2 innings and allowing eight and eight runs. Marcom saw his record move to 2-4 on the season as the Tigers scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to break the game open.
Trinity added two more runs in the sixth pushing the lead to 10-5 as the Pirates managed eight hits, but left six runners on base.
The night cap saw the Tigers take a 5-0 lead in the first three innings and never looked back for the 7-2 win.
After the rough start, Joesph Koch settled in holding the Tigers scoreless in four innings as he scattered six hits for just his second loss of the year. Koch was charged with just four of the seven runs while striking out three and walking three.
Zach Lynch finished 2-for-4 in the series finale while Jake Pawelek picked up the only RBI on a triple in the corner in the sixth inning. His triple scored Sparks from first base who was hit by a pitch with two outs.
Southwestern continues is seven-game road swing next weekend at Centenary. The Pirates and Gents open a three-game series Friday night with a 6 p.m. start from Shreveport, La.
