UMHB nips Southwestern 11-10

GEORGETOWN – A late rally came up just short as Southwestern University dropped a one-run game to the Mary Hardin-Baylor, 11-10, Tuesday night in non-conference baseball action from Rockwell Field.

Trailing 7-2, the Pirates started their rally scoring eight runs over the final six innings to tie the game at 10-10. Southwestern also set a school record for most stolen bases in a game with 10 while Colten Shea tied Zach Lynch's single-game record with four stolen bases – Lynch set the record last weekend against Schreiner.

After cutting the UMHB lead to just three runs in the sixth inning Collin Buckley and Nino Tutino was able to hold the Cru scoreless in the seventh – the only inning UMHB did not score on Tuesday.

Southwestern built more momentum in the bottom of the seventh when Will Cates belted a two-run home run cutting the Cru's lead to 8-9. Cates finished with three RBIs and was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs.

UMHB added a run in the eighth, but the Pirates again showed resilience when Drew Fleischman walked and stole second to lead off the inning. After moving to third on a Ben Little single, Fleischman scored on a wild pitch cutting the deficit back to one run.

Little would score one batter later when Charlie St. Clair pushed a ground ball to the right side to tie the game. St. Clair was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.

The Cru took advantage of a one out walk and a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt. KJ Stark tallied the winning RBI in the top of the ninth on a deep sacrifice fly to score Rob Loewe for the 11-10 win.

Southwestern returns to SCAC play on Friday traveling to 2rd-ranked Trinity. The Tigers stand atop the conference standings after sweeping Austin College last weekend while the Pirates enter at 1-2. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. Friday with both teams scheduled for a double-header on Saturday.
