Marcom’s no-hitter helps Southwestern earn Saturday split

GEORGETOWN – Brett Marcom made history Saturday throwing a no-hitter at Rockwell Field to help Southwestern University complete a 2-0 shutout against Schreiner University in game one before rain shortened the second game of the SCAC double-header.

Marcom allowed a one out walk in the first inning before retiring 11 straight batters. His second walk of the game came to the lead-off batter in the fifth inning as an error in the sixth allowed just the third and final base runner of the game for the Mountaineers.

The first-year pitcher would finish off the seventh facing just three batters over the minimum as he added five strike outs to move his record to 2-3 on the season.

Southwestern got on the board first in game one when Drew Fleischman was hit by a pitch and stole second. After stealing third, Fleischman scored when Charlie St. Clair gounded out to short giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

Colten Shea recorded his first RBI of the series in the fourth scoring Tyler Bludau who belted a double down the right field line.

Jake Pawelek finished 2-for-2 in game one before adding another hit in the second game to extend his hitting streak to six games – just one game shy of the longest of the year for the Pirates, also held by Pawelek.

The nightcap saw Schreiner take a 2-1 win in the rubber game as rain shortened the game after a 3 hour delay.

Pawelek helped the Pirates take an early 1-0 lead as he extended his hitting streak to six. He would score on a Clayton Sparks RBI through the left side three batters later.

The Mountaineers tied the game in the fifth when Reagan Reed singled to lead-off the inning and reached third on a failed pickoff attempt. Designated hitter Ryan Martin singled home Reed tying the game at 1-1 before Schreiner took the lead in the sixth.

After back-to-back singles Martin picked up his second RBI on a two out base hit that hit off the umpire scoring the go-ahead run for Schreiner.

Southwestern would threaten in the bottom of the seventh putting the first two runners on base before the rain delay started. The game would be called after the three hour delay giving the Mountaineers a 2-1 win.

The Pirates return to the diamond Tuesday to host Mary Hardin-Baylor in a non-conference game at Rockwell Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
