GEORGETOWN – Missed opportunities loomed large as Southwestern University fell in extra innings, 3-2, to Schreiner Friday night to open SCAC play from Rockwell Field.

In what may be the most heartbreaking loss this season, Southwestern (3-13) left 10 runners on base including the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th with only one out. Schreiner (10-11) capitalized on a pair of two out hits to seal the win in extra innings.

Chase Valdez doubled with two outs and scored two batters later in the 11th on a Texas Leaguer from Reagen Reed to score the go-ahead run.

Stellar pitching helped push the game into extras as Carl Mueller fired 10 strikeouts in five innings of relief to follow a solid outing from starter, Jason Stading. Mueller only allowed two hits and one run, however the one run handed the junior his second loss of the season.

Stading and Matt Barnett for the Mountaineers both pitched six innings and earned no-decisions with the Pirates starter being charged just one of the two runs. Barnett allowed eight hits and two runs in his effort.

The Pirates jumped out to the early 1-0 lead when Jake Pawelek led off the bottom of the first with a single and scored on a ground ball from Clayton Spark to the right side. Pawelek finished 2-for-4 along with Charlie St. Clair, Zach Lynch and Drew Fleischman.

Lynch reached in his first three at-bats and set a Southwestern school record with four stolen bases in the loss.

The Mountaineers would take the lead in the fourth on an RBI double from Reed, his first of the game. An errant throw allowed Valdez to score giving Schreiner a 2-1 lead.

Southwestern battled to tie the game in the sixth as Tyler Bludau led off with a double down the left field line. After a sacrifice bunt moved him to third, Bludau scored on a Fleischman single to right field.

The Pirates and Mountaineers close out the three-game conference opener Saturday at Rockwell Field with a scheduled double-header. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
