IRVING – It was an offensive explosion Sunday afternoon as the Southwestern University baseball team avoided the sweep taking a 13-2 run-rule victory at the University of Dallas.

The Pirates posted a season-high 13 runs and 12 hits behind a stellar pitching performance from Brett Marcom Sunday. Marcom helped Southwestern keep the Crusader offense at bay scattering six hits over six innings and allowing two runs with just one earned for his first win of the year.

Marcom added five strikeouts before giving way to Carl Mueller who pitched a near perfect seventh. The two pitchers combined for just two walks – the lowest of the year for the Pirates – and six strikeouts.

Southwestern jumped out to a 2-0 lead on RBIs from Andrew Glickfeld and Colten Shea in the top of the second. Shea paced the Pirates going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

The only blemish for the Pirates came in the bottom of the third when Dallas tied the game with two runs. A Southwestern error allowed the second run to cross as Marcom was charged with just one.

In the top of the fourth, Southwestern exploded for five runs on five hits when Drew Fleischman and Shea belted back-to-back RBI singles. After Shea scored Fleischman, Ketchum Marsh would drive him home on a double down the left field line.

Two more runs would cross for the Pirates aided by a pair of errors from the Crusaders giving Southwestern a 7-2 lead.

Southwestern tacked on two more runs in the fifth and a four-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Clayton Sparks blasted a triple to score Zach Lynch starting a one out rally. Sparks also finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored as the Pirates totaled 12 hits on 13 runs.

The win snapped a five-game skid for Southwestern heading into a stretch of five home games starting with Cardinal Stritch visiting Rockwell Field Tuesday. First pitch with the Pirates and Crusaders is set for 6 p.m.
