Pirates fall twice to No. 6 Tigers

GEORGETOWN – The Southwestern University baseball team fell in a Saturday afternoon double-header to Trinity dropping game one, 9-0 and game two 17-5 of a non-conference matchup between the two rivals at Rockwell Field.

The Pirates fell to 1-10 on the year while the Tigers improved to 7-1 overall. The second game ended in the eighth as Trinity was able to close the game out due to a 10-run rule of the nine inning contest.

Game one saw Southwestern fall victim to a solid pitching performance from 6th-ranked Trinity's Zack Speer. Speer threw five innings for the win allowing only two hits and adding one strikeout.

Zach Lynch, Jake Pawelek were the only starters to tally a hit for the Pirates while Tyler Herriage picked up a pinch hit single in the bottom of the seventh.

However, the Tigers turned four double plays as Southwestern left five runners on base in the loss.

Southwestern used six different pitchers as Brett Marcom was tagged with his third loss of the season. Marcom was unable to get out of the third inning and charged with the first three runs of the game.

Game two saw an offensive outburst from Trinity as the Tigers scored in every inning but the fourth.

The Pirates were able to hang with the Tigers before a four run sixth inning gave Trinity a 10-3 lead.

Clayton Spark finished 2-for-3 with an RBI in the loss as Southwestern struggled defensively with six errors that aided in four runs for Trinity.

Jeremey Rice was tagged with his first loss of the season after a workman effort saw him pitch four innings and scattered six hits. Rice allowed four runs before leaving in the fifth inning as just two runs were earned.

Southwestern returns to the road on Tuesday when the Pirates take on Hardin-Simmons in Abilene. First pitch of the non-conference tilt is set for 6 p.m.
