Pirates Close Out Regular Season with Loss to Trinity

Seven Pirate seniors closed out the regular season at home on Sunday afternoon. The Pirates fell to Trinity 10-4.

Trinity opened the game with back to back doubles and pushed two runs across in the first. Southwestern started strong as well, earning base runners with patient at bats from Colten Shea and Jeff Glasgow as they earned walks in their first plate appearances. TU starting pitcher Bogese got out of the jam by getting a strikeout and ground out to end the first.

After a scoreless second Trinity broke the game open in the third with three runs. SU got out of the bases loaded jam with a great heads up play by Ross Meyer. Meyer gathered in the pop fly and threw to Shea who tagged out Clements at second for the double play to end the inning. After a one run fourth, starting pitcher Marc Brace seemed to get even stronger as he made quick work of the Tigers with a three-up, three-down fifth.

Once again Brace worked out of a jam in the sixth as bases were loaded with only one out. The Pirate defense buckled down and allowed just one run with an inning ending double play by Shea. Shea then drew a walk to start off the bottom half of the inning, looking to ignite a rally for SU. Jay Sterling followed suit with a walk on four straight balls before the Pirates scored their first run of the game on a heads up play by Shea. Shea advanced to third on a wild pitch by Bogese and hustled around to score as Bianchi struggled to locate the ball. Through six innings, Southwestern trailed the Tigers 7-1.

After a scoreless top of the third, SU got back in the swing of things after a leadoff walk to Josh Presnall. Brace made his first plate appearance of the year and hit a screamer to second. TU's Moore fielded the ball cleanly but overthrew second, allowing Presnall to hustle around to home on the errant throw to bring the Pirates within five, 7-2.

A walk to Shea continued the inning and Sterling followed with a 2 RBI double to keep the inning alive and cut TU's lead to three, 7-4.

With two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth by Trinity, the Tigers handed Southwestern the 10-4 loss to close the regular season. Sterling posted the only hit of the game for SU while Trinity's Francke led all hitters going 3-4 on the afternoon.

Brace garnered his first loss of the season allowing 10 runs, five earned, on 10 hits while walking seven and striking out two. Bogese earned the win in 6.1 innings of work with seven strikeouts and seven walks.

Southwestern ends the regular season at 3-36 on the year and 0-19 in the SCAC while Trinity improves to 32-7 and 15-5. The Pirates will host the SCAC Championships beginning April 25th and enter as the #5 seed while Trinity comes in as the #2 seed.
