Baseball Drops Doubleheader to UT-Dallas

RICHARDSON, Texas - Southwestern lost 13-2 and 15-8 to UT-Dallas in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

UTD scored early and often in game one.  The Comets loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a hit batsman to begin the game.  The Pirates' defense turned a double play, but a run scored and the Comets took the 1-0 lead.  An inning later, the home team went up 3-0 on a 2 RBI double to right field by Gandy.

The Comets added 2 runs in the 3rd, 6 in the 4th, and a run in the 5th before Southwestern got on the scoreboard.  In the top of the 6th inning, the Pirates reached on a catcher's interference, a single and a walk to load the bases.  Then Jeff Glasgow reached on an error by the second baseman, which allowed 2 runs to score to cut it to 12-2.

UD added a run in the bottom of the 6th and held off Southwestern in the 7th to preserve the 13-2 win in game one.

Game two got off to a better start for Southwestern.  Jay Sterling reached on a throwing error by the catcher and scored on a double down the right field line by Colton Shea.  After a pair of groundouts, Will Burks was hit by a pitch.  Then Tyler Herriage followed with a single through the right side to bring home Shea and give SU the early 2-0 lead.

The Comets responded with 5 runs in the bottom half of the frame and added 2 more in the 2nd to go up 7-2.

The Pirates' offense got hot again in the top of the 5th.  Burks, Herriage, and Charlie Garrett hit consecutive singles to load the bases.  Then Colby Dutton followed with a 2 RBI single to left field.  Will Cates drove in another run on a ground out to third base to cut it to a 7-5 game.

That would be as close as Southwestern would get as UD added 2 runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Both teams scored a run in the 6th, but the Crusaders opened up the game with 3 runs in the 7th to make it 13-6.

The Pirates rallied in the top of the 8th.  Burks hit a one out double to right center and later advanced to third on a wild pitch.  He scored on a single by Garrett.  A single by Dutton gave the Bucs' runners on first and third.  Then Cates singled through the left side to drive in another run.  However, it would not be enough as Dallas added 2 runs of their own in the 8th and held SU scoreless in the 9th to secure the 15-8 win.

Eight different players notched multiple hits for the Pirates, as the team out hit UTD 19-12 in game two.  Southwestern falls to 3-32 following the doubleheader.

The team goes on the road to face Concordia (TX) on Monday, April 15th, beginning at 6:00pm.
