Pirates Rally, but Lose in Extra Innings

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern forced extra innings, coming back by scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the 6th.  However, they could not hold off Mary-Hardin Baylor in the 10th inning and lost 11-8.

The Crusaders were the first to score after they loaded the bases. Taute scored on a RBI ground out by Stafford. Later, a wild pitch allowed Shukanes to score. Whiddon then scored in the top of the 3rd on a RBI single by Loewe, putting Mary-Hardin Baylor up 3-0 after 3 innings.

The Pirates closed the gap in the bottom of the 4th inning, when Cruz Luna scored on a RBI single by Jay Sterling.  Sterling later scored on a RBI single by Chase Allen, putting the Pirates within a run at 3-2.

Then it seemed Mary-Hardin Baylor was about to put the game to bed early, as they added 4 runs in the top of the 6th inning.  The Crusaders scored on a RBI single, a 2 RBI double, and then Stafford crossed the plate on a throw down to second on a stolen base by Florack to go up 7-2.

Southwestern rallied in the bottom of the 6th, which put them ahead going into the next two innings. It all started with Zachary Lynch's double, as he later scored on a sacrifice fly by Jay Sterling. The Pirates scored three more runs on two doubles, a single, and a wild pitch to take the 8-7 lead.

However, UMHB tied the game at 8 a piece in the 8th inning.  They loaded the bases after getting a two out single and drawing a pair of walks.  Whiddon tied the game after Burrow was hit by the pitcher.

In the extra session, the Crusaders took advantage of some Pirate miscues. A pair of singles and an error by the right fielder put two runners in scoring position for UMHB.  They then scored on a balk, a RBI single, and Burrow scored on the throw down to catch Spencer stealing second base.

The Pirates had a chance to get back into the game, but the offense struggled since their outburst, and lost the game in 10 innings 11-8.  Cruz Luna led the offense by going 1-3, with a double, scored 2 runs, and drew 2 walks. Southwestern moves to 2-28 on the season, while Mary Hardin-Baylor improves to 14-14.

The Pirates will be at home again this Saturday, April 6th, as they play the University of Dallas at 1pm.
