Pirates Drop Both Games to Austin College

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern Pirates lost both games to Austin College, falling short 7-3 and 16-4 on Saturday afternoon.

 

The Roos' Austin Vaughn was the first to score, after Colt Herron hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the top 1st. The Pirates responded after both Zachary Lynch and Jeff Glasgow hit doubles in the bottom 1st, scoring Lynch to tie the game up at one a piece.

 

Todd Takabuki and Jeremy Halfo both scored in the next inning, after stealing bases and advancing on wild pitches. Later in the top of the 4th inning, Vaughn scored again after he reached on an error by the third baseman, stole second, and Josh Coughennow doubled him home to put the Roos up 4-1.  Southwestern responded with two more runs in the bottom of the 4th, when both Jay Sterling and Will Burks scored on a Colby Dutton single to left field and had the Pirates within one.

 

However, Austin College scored 2 more runs in the top of the 5th and sealed the victory in the 7th, when Patrick Renz hit a triple and scored on the next play to end the game 7-3.

In game two, Austin College immediately jumped out to a 4-0 lead.  First, they loaded the bases and then Herron and Leech both singled on consecutive plays, scoring Vaughn and Will Schommer. CJ Adame followed with a 2 RBI single, bringing home Herron and Tyler Appelquist.

 

The Roos scored 7 more runs on 6 hits in the top of the 5th to put them up 11-0.

 

However, Southwestern would respond in the bottom half of the inning.  The Pirates loaded the bases and Jeff Glasgow was hit by a pitch to score a run and Cruz Luna drew a walk to bring in another.  Will Burks drove in a run after reaching on a fielder's choice.  Then Glasgow crossed the plate on a wild pitch to cut the lead for Austin College down to 11-4.

 

Austin College scored 5 more runs in the next 3 innings and won the game 16-4.  The winning pitchers were Marshall Korn in game 1, improving him to 2-2, and Todd Takabuki in game 2, giving him a 1-0 start of the season.

 

The pair of wins improved Austin College to 5-16, while Southwestern drops to 2-18. The Pirates will close the series tomorrow at home at 1:00PM.
