Pirates’ Rallies Fall Short

Pirates’ Rallies Fall Short

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Pirates did everything they could to make it a close game, but Centenary sealed both games late, winning game one 13-3, and game two 16-4 of the doubleheader.

In game one, Southwestern was the first to score, as Jay Sterling walked and advanced to third on two balks. He was eventually brought home on a sacrifice fly by Zachary Lynch.

Then Centenary responded in the next two innings with five runs. During the top 2nd, Craig Littleman had a triple down the left field line, which allowed Jemari James to score. Littleman then scored after Ben Schweinfurth had a sacrifice fly. Then in the top 3rd, Tyler Clakley tripled through the right side, allowing Ryan Gasporra to score. Clakley then scored again after Christian Sebastien singled to the shortstop.

The Pirates answered with one run in each the bottom of the fourth and fifth. In the end, however, the Pirates were unable to catch up.

Centenary then began to pull away in the last two innings, as Southwestern was unable to respond with a score, posting two more runs in the sixth and five in the seventh, resulting in Centenary's convincing 13-3 victory.

Layton Tromba earned the win while Carl Mueller received the loss.

Game two would be a different story. The first two innings between both teams were scoreless. Then between the top 3rd and top 4th innings, the Centenary Gents jumped out to a 6-0 lead.

But Southwestern would cut the deficit to 6-4. In the bottom of the 4th inning, the Pirates had the bases loaded.  Jeff Glasgow, Cruz Luna, Lance Gottardy and Will Burks were all brought home in the inning and seemed to guarantee Southwestern to close the gap and make it an interesting game.

Then in the top of the sixth, the Gents extended their lead to three, 7-4, with one more run.

Southwestern wasn't able to close the gap further before Centenary opened the flood gates with a nine run seventh to go ahead 16-4. SU attempted a comeback in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases with two-outs, but were unable to push a run across as the game came to a close.

Thompson earned the win while Cody Lovas garnered the loss. Glasgow and Dickson Wharton posted multi-hit games in the loss.

Both wins help Centenary to move to 4-2 on the season, while SU drops to 1-8 on the season and start SCAC conference play 0-2. Southwestern looks to snap their six-game losing streak tomorrow, closing out the series with Centenary at 1:00 PM Sunday.
