Pirates Raise nearly $1000 on Final Home Weekend

GEORGETOWN, TX - On the final weekend of home events on Southwestern's campus the Pirates weren't only focused on closing the season with a win, but also turned their attention to raise awareness for a couple of non-profit organizations close to their hearts, the Special Olympics and HEADstrong Foundation.

At Saturday's baseball game against Hendrix College, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) sponsored a snow cone and popcorn sale for the Special Olympics. Almost $300 was raised in the single day campaign to benefit the Special Olympics, a partnership adopted by NCAA Division IIIs everywhere. In addition to the fundraising it was an opportunity for Georgetown's Special Olympians to be introduced and recognized just days before their soccer, track and tennis championships. Special Olympians ran out with the Pirates during introductions and received a rousing round of applause and wishes of good luck.

The Southwestern lacrosse team has been touched by a cause close to their hearts since their first season two years ago and continue to work to raise awareness and funds in honor of Brady, a young man who suffered from Acute Myelogenous Leukemia.

The HEADstrong Foundation's mission is "to carry on the legacy and vision of the HEADstrong founder Nicholas Colleluori through supporting those affected by blood cancer and those also working towards eliminating it." Colleluori was a lacrosse player that attended Hofstra University and was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphona during his time there.

Spearheaded by SU lacrosse senior Donnie Murray, the HEADstrong Foundation sold merchandise and gathered funds to help the cause and raised just under $700 during the one day event.

With the success of both events Southwestern is looking at ways to expand on these partnerships next year and hope to be a part of the success of both organization's missions.
