Baseball Splits with Hendrix

Baseball Splits with Hendrix

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern defeated Hendrix 2-1 and then lost 11-0 on the afternoon.  The Pirates received a stellar pitching performance from Chris Webber in game one and the Warriors saw a gem from Cannon Schrank and their relievers in game two.

In the first game, the Pirates got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning.  Cruz Luna singled through the left side to start things off.  Heath Spencer was hit by a pitch and Nate Shipp drew a walk to load the bases for the 'Bucs.  Then Zach Lynch singled through the left side to score Luna and keep the bases full.  Cray Betts followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to put Southwestern up 2-0.

Radack led off the top of the second with a double to left field for the Warriors.  He advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored on a ground out by J.T. Bowen to cut it to a 2-1 game.

Hendrix College's Aaron Bowen singled to right field to lead off in the top of the fifth.  He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Raskin.  Sims singled to left field with Bowen moving to third base with two outs.  Sims stole second base with Radack at the plate.  However, Chris Webber ended the side by getting Radack to strike out swinging.

Chris Webber and the Pirates defense would hold the Warriors scoreless for the remainder of the game to earn the win.  Webber would scatter one earned run and seven hits over seven innings and strike out six batters en route to the victory.

In game two of the afternoon, it would be all Hendrix.

In the top of the first inning, Raskin reached on an error by the shortstop.  He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Vlaskamp and took third after a passed ball.  Raskin scored on a ground out by Sims for the early 1-0 lead.

The Warriors added a run a piece in each of the second and fourth innings to extend their lead to 3-0.

Southwestern looked poised to close out the fifth inning with no damage, but Hendrix took advantage of some Pirate miscues that subsequently loaded the bases.  A pair of back to back singles brought in three more runs to make it 6-0.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Warriors added their seventh run of the game.

Hendrix continued to keep the pressure on and scored four more runs on four hits in the ninth inning for the eventual 11-0 final score.

The Southwestern offense was only able to muster three hits against the fine pitching performances by Schrank, Wood, and Keever in the second game of the doubleheader.

After the two teams split the doubleheader, Southwestern's record is now 11-26 overall and 7-12 in conference while Hendrix moves to 21- 18 and 11-8 in conference.

Both teams return tomorrow, Sunday, April 22nd to finish the series at Rockwell Field in Georgetown, Texas at 1pm.  Southwestern will be honoring its Seniors with a Senior Day ceremony just before the start of the game.
