Late Game Rallies Sink Pirates

IRVING, Texas – Southwestern dropped two games in the double header on Saturday afternoon to the University of Dallas, 3-2 and 6-3.  The Crusaders took the lead in the last inning in game one and broke out of a tie in the eighth inning to win game two.

The Pirates opened the scoring in the top of the third inning of the first game.  Cruz Luna reached on an error by the shortstop with two outs.  The speedy Luna stole second base with Heath Spencer at the plate.  Spencer then singled down the left field line to score Luna and give the 'Bucs the 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Crusaders scored a run of their own.  Carlson led off with a single to right center and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt.  He then scored on a double to right field by Bossert to tie the game at one run a piece.

Southwestern took the lead in the top of the fifth.  Jeff Glasgow led off with a walk.  Zac Cleveland entered the game as a pinch runner for Glasgow.  Cleveland advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Herriage.  Then Colby Dutton singled to right field to give the 'Bucs runners on first and third base.   Next, Luna drove in Cleveland from third on a fielder's choice with Dutton out at second on the play to take control 2-1.

Carlson led off for the University of Dallas in the bottom of the sixth and reached base after being hit by a pitch.  He advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt and later scored on a single by Farris to tie the game again.

The Crusaders hit a pair of singles in the bottom of the seventh to score and defeat the Pirates 3-2 in the opening game of the doubleheader on Saturday.

In game two of the doubleheader, University of Dallas grabbed the early lead in the bottom of the first.  Arnold led off with a triple and later scored on a single by Caluda to jump out 1-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Crusaders added to their lead.  A walk, single, and double led to one run and another came on a sacrifice fly to center field a batter later to give the University of Dallas a 3-0 cushion.

The Pirates got a run across in the top of the sixth inning.  Heath Spencer and Nate Shipp hit a pair of singles up the middle with one out.  Zach Lynch followed with a single of his own to drive in Spencer from second base to cut it to a 3-1 game.

Southwestern rallied again in the top of the eighth.  Cruz Luna led off with a single to right center.  Then Spencer singled through the right side to advance Luna to second base.  Both runners advanced on a passed ball and then Charlie Garrett walked to load the bases with two outs.  Cray Betts followed with a 2 RBI single down the right field line to tie the game at 3-3.

In the bottom half of the eighth, the Crusaders scored three runs on four hits to take the 6-3 lead into the ninth and they were able to close out the game for the second win of the day.

Heath Spencer led the Pirates in both games on the day.  He went 2-3 with a RBI and a walk in the first game and was 2-4 with a walk and scored twice in the second one.

The Pirates conclude the series with the Crusaders on Sunday afternoon.
