Road Trip Ends With Pair of Losses

CONWAY, Arkansas – Southwestern finished their Spring Break road trip with a pair of losses at Hendrix this weekend.  The Warriors defeated the Pirates 10-4 and 11-1 on consecutive days as the home team prevailed against the road weary 'Bucs.

In game one of the series, Hendrix jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two RBI double to left center by Andrew Thames.

Southwestern earned their first runs of the game in the top of the fourth.  Nate Shipp homered to left field with one out.  Zach Lynch later doubled to center field with two outs.  Lynch moved to third as Cray Betts reached base on a fielding error by the shortstop.  Lynch then scored and Betts moved to second on a balk by Hendrix starting pitcher Geoff Lomax.  Charlie Garrett followed with a RBI single up the middle to give the Pirates the 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Warriors rallied to score four runs on four hits to take the 6-3 advantage.

The Pirates struck again in the sixth.  Lynch reached base on a bad throw from the shortstop and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  The next batter, Betts, drove home Lynch with a triple to right center field to cut it to a 6-4 game.

Hendrix added three runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth to seal the 10-4 victory for the Warriors.

Southwestern struggled in the second game of the weekend.  By the time the 'Bucs had scored, they found themselves behind 8-0 after Hendrix scored runs in the first, second, and fifth innings.

The Pirates' only run in the game came in the sixth inning.  Nate Shipp led off with a triple to center field.  Then Jeff Glasgow followed with a single to bring Shipp in to score to make it 8-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Warriors added three more runs to end the game early at 11-1.

The 'Bucs were able to muster six hits total on the day.  The staunch Warrior defense made no errors and their pitching staff allowed only one walk to keep Southwestern off of the base paths.

Southwestern falls to 6-17 overall and 2-6 in conference games following the weekend series.  Hendrix goes to 14-6 on the year and is 6-2 in conference play.

The Pirates next action is at home against Hardin-Simmons at 3:00pm on March, 20th at Rockwell Field in Georgetown, Texas.
