Pirates Falter in Conference Opener

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Pirates struggled to convert base runners into runs in the conference opener versus Austin College on Saturday afternoon.  Southwestern earned ten hits on the day, equaling the total put up by the Roos.  However, the road team converted more of their opportunities' to get the 5-2 win.

Charlie Garrett led off the game for the Pirates with a full count single up the middle.  Garrett stole second and later advanced to third on another single up the middle by Heath SpencerCray Betts brought Garrett home with a sacrifice fly to center field.  Jeff Glasgow followed with an infield single.  Lance Gottardy walked to load the bases for the 'Bucs.  Cruz Luna took the count to full and eventually flew out to center field to end the inning with the Pirates up 1-0.

Appelquist led off the second with a single to left center for Austin College.  Williams hit a one out double to deep center field, scoring Appelquist from first base.  Molinaro grounded out to second and advanced Williams over to third.  Hendrix grounded out to third base to end the side at 1-1.

In the top of the third, Muder hit a one out single up the middle.  Leech hit a hard ground ball through the left side and moved Muder over to second.  Coughennower flew out to left for the second out.  Appelquist followed with an RBI single through the left side, scoring Muder from second base.  Schulmeister hit a ball into the gap at shortstop, but Spencer made a diving stop and got the third out at second base.

Muder drew a leadoff walk to start the fifth inning.  He later stole second with Coughennower at the plate.  Coughennower then walked to give the 'Roos runners on first and second base.  Appelquist singled up the middle and scored Muder.  Coughennower moved all the way over to third after Betts made an error getting the ball in.  Schulmeister hit a single through the right side to score another run for Austin College to give them the 4-1 lead.

Jeff Glasgow hit a one out double to the right field fence in the bottom of the sixth.  Nate Shipp followed with a single up the middle to move Glasgow over to third.  Shipp advanced to second on a wild pitch with Gottardy at the plate.  Gottardy struck out swinging and Cruz Luna flew out to second base and the 'Bucs came up short with no runs in the inning.

In the top of the ninth, Schommer hit a leadoff single for the 'Roos and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Muder.  Leech lined out to left field for the second out.  Coughennower reached on a throwing error by Heath Spencer and Schommer scored on the play to make it a 5-1 game.

Shipp led off the bottom of the ninth with a single through the left side of the field.  Colby Dutton hit a two out double deep to left center to score Nate Shipp from first base for the Pirates last run for the 5-2 final score.

The series continues on Sunday, February 26th, at 1:00pm at Rockwall Field on the Southwestern campus in Georgetown, Texas.
