Baseball Blasts Way to Pair of 5-4 Wins Over Schreiner

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern Pirates rode a power surge, courtesy of Jeff Glasgow and Nate Shipp, to a pair of 5-4 victories on Tuesday afternoon.  Glasgow went 3-3 in the opener, with two doubles, a homerun and drove in four runs en route to the win.  Shipp led the way in game two with a three-run shot over the fence in left center to jump start the 'Bucs.

In game one of the doubleheader, the Pirates took control early, scoring in the bottom of the first inning.  Heath Spencer reached on an error by the third baseman.  Then Glasgow scored Spencer with a two-out double to left center.

Schreiner got on the scoreboard in the top of the third with an RBI single from Martinez.  The Pirates retaliated in the bottom of the inning with a solo smash from Glasgow to right field.

The Mountaineers scored two runs in the fifth on a Thomas double to right field that brought home Martinez and Rundzieher.  Again, the Pirates fired back immediately, scoring two runs of their own.  Heath Spencer hit a one out single to begin the rally for the 'Bucs.  Betts followed with a double to left center that moved Spencer over to third.  Glasgow provided the runs with his double to left center before the Mountaineers could escape the inning.

The Pirates ceded a run in the top of the sixth, which set the stage for a 4-4 tie game going into their final at bat an inning later.  Cray Betts led off with single to left field.  Schreiner opted to pitch carefully around Glasgow after the damage he'd done earlier in the game and walked him, putting runners on first and second.  Shipp then put down a bunt to the left side of the field that ended up being an infield hit to load the bases.  The next batter, Zachary Lynch had the walk off single to center field to give the Pirates their first win of the season.

In the second game of the afternoon, it would be Schreiner that would strike first.  Leadoff batter Rundzieher, opened with a double to left field and advanced to third on a passed ball.  He would later score on a single to left field by Martinez to give them the 1-0 lead.

Southwestern punched back in the bottom of the first.  Lance Gottardy singled to left field followed by Betts drawing a walk to put two runners on base for the Pirates.  A batter later, Shipp would step into the batter's box and homer to left center to give them the 3-1 lead.

Schreiner would get a run in the fifth on a RBI single by Whitehead.  In the bottom of the inning, both Colby Dutton and Ross Meyer singled.  Dutton scored on a single up the middle by Gottardy. Meyer later advanced to third on Betts' fielder's choice and scored on a pick-off throw that ended up in center field making it a 5-2 game.

The Mountaineers added a run in the sixth and entered the top of the seventh down two runs.  They got two singles followed by a sacrifice bunt by Chavez to give them runners on second and third with one out.  Pisseri grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Whitehead.  The next batter, Bukowski, was hit with a pitch giving Schreiner men on first and second with two outs.  The Pirates pitcher, Derek Fleischman, got Trevino to strike out looking to end the inning and the game.

With the two wins from Tuesday, the Pirates take their record to 2-7 and Schreiner moves to 1-6 on the year.

The Pirates compete again this week on Friday, February 17th, at 3:00pm and host Texas Lutheran University.
