Pirates Drop 2 Heartbreakers on Day 1 at Millsaps

Pirates Drop 2 Heartbreakers on Day 1 at Millsaps

The playoff hopes of the Pirates were dashed Saturday afternoon after Millsaps College pulled out two close games despite a dominate pitching performance from Chris Webber in game one and a strong showing by the Pirate offence in game 2.

In game one, sophomore starting pitcher Chris Webber took the mound determined to keep the Pirates in the ballgame as long as he had the ball.  He did just that.  Webber went 6.2 innings in a 7 inning ballgame, allowing 5 runs on just 4 hits and striking out 5.  The Pirate bats were unalbe to get behind Webber early and the Majors took a 2-0 lead in the second on a home run.  Webber would hold the offensively strong Majors at bay until the 7th.  After threatening in the 4th, the Pirates were able to tie up the score in the top of the 5th thanks to a Chris Lowry, junior 3rd baseman, home run over the scoreboard in left center field.  Three consecutive singles by Jeff Glasgow, first year 1st baseman, Charlie Garrett, first year shortstop and heavy contender for SCAC newcomer of the year, and senior centerfielder Todd Boone loaded the bases with one outs.  Sophomore 2nd baseman Nate Shipp hit a rocket ground ball down the 3rd baseline that Millsaps 3rd baseman Will Hawkins made a diving play on and was able to tag the 3rd base bag to prevent a bigger inning for the Pirates.  A flyout ended the inning in a 2-2 tie.  The top of the 7th saw the Pirates take the lead after three singles by Todd Boone, Nate Shipp, and senior outfielder John Wooten gave the Pirates a 3-2 lead.  With 2 outs, sophomore left fielder Cray Betts doubled to right center field scoring both Shipp and Wooten.  Going into the bottom of the 7th Southwestern held a 5-2 lead.  Webber was lifted with 2 outs in the seventh after a flyout, a double, a strike out and a single.  With the score 5-4 with two outs and a runner on first two Pirate relievers walked 4 consecutive batters.  The game ended 6-5 with the final walk driving in the winning run for the Majors.

The Pirates racked up 10 hits on Majors' ace Aaron Williams.  Todd Boone, Nate Shipp, and Chris Lowry each had two hits.  Nate Shipp, John Wooten, and Chris Lowry each had an RBI on the game while Cray Betts' 7th inning double gave him the game lead with 2 RBI.

After such a heart breaking loss, the Pirates started slow in game 2.  The first hit for Southwestern came in the top of the 3rd when Chris Lowry doubled down the left field line and later advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch.  Senior designated hitter Matt Clark hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive home Lowry to cut the lead to 2-1.    The Pirate bats awoke from there pounding Millsaps pitching for 15 hits and 13 runs.  The Pirates put up 2 in the 5th, 4 in the 6th, 2 in the 7th, 2 in the 8th and 1 in the 9th.  The Pirate pitcher, however, was unable to tame the Majors' bats and allowed 16 runs, 11 earned.  Todd Boone, John Wooten, Jeff Glasgow, Cray Betts, Johnny Gavrel (first year catcher), Matt Clark, and Charlie Garrett each had two hits a piece while Chris Lowry chipped in with a hit of his own.  Charlie Garrett and Todd Boone each had 2 RBI and Johnny Gavrel finished with 2 RBI and 2 doubles.
