HOT HITTING PIRATES CONTINUE WITH STREAK WITH VICTORY OVER CARDINAL STRITCH

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern baseball team continued to find their stride with a 7-5 non-conference with over Cardinal Stritch on Wednesday evening at Rockwell Field.  With the win SU improves to 6-17 on the year and has won their last three games.

The Wolves struck first posting one to open the game. The Pirates started off their half of the inning with a leadoff double by Todd Boone, but couldn’t bring him around despite a single to follow by Matthew Clark.

Boone took advantage of having two runners on base when he came up in the second inning, despite there being two outs. With Charlie Garrett and Chris Lowry on first and second Boone poked a shot into right center that carried all the way to the fence for a triple, scoring both runners and giving the Pirates a 2-1 lead through two.

Cardinal Stritch pulled back ahead in the fourth inning, scoring two runs on a bases loaded, one out single to centerfield by Bahm. The two runs game CSU a 3-2 lead.

Boone once again came to the plate with runners on base, although this time in scoring position and with one out, and his fly ball to centerfield brought in Lowry to tie the game 3-3 through four innings.

The Wolves posted one more run in the fifth but SU quickly answered as Johnny Gavrel drilled a two-out, 3-0 pitch to centerfield that allowed a hustling Cray Betts to score from first base to even things up 4-4. Lowry brought home Gavrel on a bouncer up the middle, and Garrett cleared the bags with a triple to left center, bringing the count to 7-4.

In the seventh inning Cardinal Stritch placed one more run on the board to cut SU’s lead to two, 7-5.

Eric Kegley and Nick Cox came in relief in the final two innings to close out the game. Brice Bender earned the win going 1.2 innings while allowing one earned run and two hits. CSU's Clavert received the loss.

Boone and Lowry had big nights for the Pirates. Boone went 2-2 with 3 RBI's while Lowry was 3-4 with 3 runs and 1 RBI.

Southwestern remains at home for a pair of SCAC contests this weekend, looking to exact revenge on Austin College with single games on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 2:00 pm.
