PIRATES FALTER AT HOME

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern's big offensive night was not enough to take the wins against conference rival Trinity on Saturday afternoon at Rockwell Field in Georgetown as the Pirates fell 16-3 and 14-9.

The Trinity University Tigers used big innings in the first and third to propel them to a 16-3 win over Southwestern in game one of this afternoon’s doubleheader at Rockwell field. The Tigers posted five in the first and six in the third to take control early. 

Patrick Keenan provided the offensive highlight of the game for the Pirates with a long homerun to right in the second. Todd Boone also added two hits in three at bats.

Offensively the Tigers were led by Kevin Calbick (3-3, 3 runs, 2 RBI) and Dylan Early (2-5, 1 run, 4 RBI).

In the nightcap Trinity used an eighth inning rally to take a back and forth contest from the Pirates and sweep this afternoon’s doubleheader.

The game was close throughout, with the third and ninth innings being the only ones with no scoring. The difference was the eighth. After the Pirates scored four in the seventh to draw within one at 10-9. The Tigers responded with four of their own to stretch their lead to back to five. Nick Pappas keyed the rally with an RBI double and a run scored.

In the Pirates’ seventh inning comeback Johnny Gavrel singled in Chris Lowry after he had walked to open the inning. Lance Gottardy followed with a single of his own and Cray Betts’ hit through the right side loaded the bases. Charlie Garrett scored Gavrel with a sacrifice fly to right. A throwing error by Trinity catcher Kyle Felix on Betts’ stolen base attempt allowed Gottardy to score and advanced Betts to third. Todd Boone drove in Betts to bring make the score 10-9.

The Pirates got balanced offensive contributions throughout their lineup. Todd Boone led the way from the top of the lineup, going 3-5 with an RBI. Nate Shipp also had three hits, a run scored, and two RBI. Cray Betts went 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Charlie Garrett was 2-2, with two runs and two RBI.

These two teams will wrap up their three game series tomorrow afternoon starting at 1:00 PM at Rockwell field.
