COSTLY ERRORS LEAD TO PIRATE LOSS IN CONFERENCE OPENER

GEORGETOWN, Texas - After a great start to the game that saw the Pirates leading early SU hit a snag and dropped their first SCAC conference match-up to MIllsaps College 19-10 Saturday afternoon.

Millsaps starter Elliot Varney struggled, lasting only 1/3 of an inning, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Majors starting DH Jake Mills was called upon for emergency relief and he delivered 6 and 2/3 strong innings, allowing only two runs on six hits and striking out six.

The Pirates struggled all afternoon to find outs against the Millsap lineup. Starter Chris Webber went three innings allowing seven runs (four earned) on six hits. From there it was a patchwork effort with Alan Lowry, Russell Kelly, Nick Cox, and Brice Bender each appearing for two innings or less.

The story of the day was the lack of defense on both sides. The Pirates committed nine errors, the Majors committed six. The difference was that seemingly every time the Pirates allowed a batter to reach on an error he was eventually driven in, leading to several big innings. Millsaps scored six in the third, four in the fifth, three in the seventh, and four in the eighth.

Offensively the Majors were led by Jules Roussel who went 3-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Kevin Wall, Josh Ordeneaux, and Will Elmore each added two RBI of their own.

The Pirates got a nice offensive performance from right fielder John Wooten who went 5-6 with two RBI and two runs scored. Charlie Garrett added two RBIs and Chris Lowry had two hits and a run scored.

The Pirates will look to regroup and refocus tomorrow afternoon in a rematch with Millsaps starting at 1:00 PM at Rockwell Field.
