Men's Soccer Makes Statement With Win in Exhibition Game

GEORGETOWN, Texas. - Pirates head coach Dustin Norman started his career at Southwestern University with a preseason win over of University of Mary Hardin-Baylor last Saturday, August 25th. With UMHB ranked as the No. 16 seed in the 2018 Preseason United Soccer Coaches (USC) Poll, the Pirates defeated the Crusaders at their home field in Belton, TX with a final score of 4-2.

In the start of the game, both sides were even on the scoreboard, until UMHB broke the tie scoring the first goal of the match by setting the score at 0-1. A few minutes later, the SU sophomore Brendan Dauth responded back with scoring a goal for the Pirates to once again bring the game to a tie. Once again, SU went up by a goal on the scoreboard with an incredible chip over the goalkeeper by the junior Luke Orren.

At the start of the second half, the Pirates kept the intensity they had built in the first half. With the ball moving from side to side, sophomore Andrew Hernandez increased the Pirates advantage on the game by placing another one in the back of the net. Shortly after the third goal, the Pirates gave up a second goal from the Crusaders, setting the score to 3-2. However, the Pirates did not stop fighting and scored a fourth and final goal by sophomore, Sacco Fernandez.

The Pirates next game will be their first home game on Friday, August 31st against University of Chicago.
