Southwestern announces 2016 Hall of Fame inductees on Wednesday

GEORGETOWN – Southwestern will induct two former student-athletes and one team into its Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, Sept. 10. The 2016 Hall of Fame class includes Amiel Gross (baseball), Billy Joe Losak (baseball/men's basketball/men's track) and the 1984 baseball team.

The class will be inducted during a banquet at the Red and Charline McCombs Campus Center. The group also will be honored at halftime of the Southwestern football game against McMurry later in the day.

Gross, a 1996 graduate, was a three-time All-American on the diamond. He was named Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons, while playing under legendary head coach Jim Mallon. Gross also led the Pirates to the the 1996 SCAC championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional.

Losak, who graduated in 1967, was a three-sport standout at Southwestern. He helped the baseball squad to the 1964 Big State Conference co-championship. As a versatile athlete on the diamond, who played eight of nine positions while in Georgetown, Losak was an All-Big State Conference honoree in 1966.

The 1984 baseball team is arguably one of the best in Southwestern history. Under the direction of Coach Mallon, the Pirates posted a 53-16 record and finished in third place at the NAIA National Championship. Scott Neal (first team), Phil Wellman (first team) and Danny Mickan (honorable mention) all received All-America honors, while Mickan also received the NAIA Golden Glove Award.

Additionally, four former student-athletes will be added to the Athletics Hall of Honor for receiving either All-America or Academic All-America laurels during their careers. Cameron Button (men's golf), Will Cates (baseball), Kaitlyn Foster (volleyball) and Chandler Lentz (volleyball) all will be honored for their time as Pirate student-athletes.
