In 2007, the Marvin D. Henderson, Sr. (’41) Tennis Courts became a reality and offers Pirate athletes one of the top tennis facilities in NCAA Division III. With nine DecoTurf II courts, Southwestern has the most courts on one site in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. In the summer of 2022, the facility was resurfaced, and a new color scheme of dark grey on light grey was implemented bringing a unique look, giving the Pirates an identity with their school colors. At the same time, the wind screens were upgraded and rebranded, creating a great home-court advantage. One of the signature features of the Marvin D. Henderson Tennis Center is the live streaming and recording of matches powered by Playsight, the premier brand in tennis for camera services. The facility has hosted major events that include the 2015 and 2023 SCAC Championships, 2015 and 2019 ITA Regional Tournaments and served as the headquarters for the USTA Texas Slam in 2022 and 2023 which is the largest junior tournament in the nation.

A generous donation from the Henderson Family provided the funds for Pirate tennis as the courts were renamed for Marvin D. Henderson, Sr. Henderson graduated from Southwestern in 1941 as a two-year letterman and a four-year member of the varsity tennis team. He was well known throughout Texas holding 36 state rankings which included 12 rankings at No. 1 and 10 more at No. 1 on the Texas circuit. Henderson played extensively on the UTSA Senior Tour, racking up many awards and earned 36 UTSA National Rankings since 1981. In 2009, Henderson was ranked No. 1 in singles and doubles in the United States in the 85 and over division. He was also the first tennis player to be inducted into the Southwestern Hall of Fame. Marvin had a strong passion for growing the game of tennis and part of his generosity includes keeping the upper three courts of the facility open for public play.
